From the panoramas I see that quite a few of you panoyers are also avid mountaineers, cyclists, hikers, ... I suppose also that quite a few of you use GPS when you go outside.

Just to let you know that I'm working on a site where you can upload and share your GPS tracks. It is still in beta, but I'm working hard to make it usable. Here's how it looks like:

As part of an ongoing change, I've just released a new version of panoye. You'll probably notice a few minor layout changes, but the biggest one is in the "comments" section:

In short:

The list of comments is now more concise and readable,
With the Twitter and Facebook widgets where you can share panoramas you like/upload with your friends.

Happy new 2011 to all panoyers! And -- thank you all for using panoye!

If you look at the best of 2010 -- it seems it was a year marked with Bermudez's panoramic photos. Congratulations to Bermudez. But congratulations also to Yonatan4 for his second place and htimsnivek for his ninth place.

For me, 2010 was the year when my daughter celebrated her first birthday. So, I must admit, panoye was not on the top of my priorities. To be a developer isn't easy, but to be a parent is much harder :)

Anyway, there are big plans for 2011:

Facebook and twitter signon (no need to memorize your passwords!)
Facebook app for panoye (browse panoramas directly in Facebook)
New design
Cubic panoramas (not only equirectangular)
...

The 2009. year is near its end. It was an interesting one on Panoye - lots of new users, lots of nice panoramas...

So I decided to make a small "best of" list of this year's panoramas. You can see the list here Best panoramas of 2009. The list is not yet finished, the order can still be changed, new popular panoramas could be uploaded.

Panoye in Google Chrome

Google just released (finally!) the Linux version of its browser Chrome:

For those using Chrome - there was a small bug while scrolling the panorama. The bug is resolved now.

Panoye framework

A few month ago I decided to go open source. Not all of the code from Panoye, only one part - the framework. So, if you want to take a look on this code, search for bugs, you can download it here: http://code.google.com/p/panoye-f/.

The framework consists of PHP scripts and classes which are not specific to Panoye and can be used for any PHP5 powered site.

The most important technical details od panoye-f framework are:

Small and lightweight,
It has its own ORM (Object Relation Mapping) classes,
Code creation (ORM and CRUD) from database tables,
Filesystem (gzipped) caching for pages,
Automatic class loading (no need to import, require or require_once),
Unit testing,
Lots of utility classes (Strings, RSSBuilder, SitemapBuilder, HtmlLexer, ...),
Sql, DbIterator and AppObject, Date and Timestamp classes fordatabase programming and ORM,
Automatic creation of search engine friendly links for objects in database.

Partial panoramas orientation

This is a response to a question asked by gopanthers - Orientation Failure results in No Panoramas Saved. The problem is the orientation of partial panoramas.

After you selected your panorama type to be partial - the next thing to do is - orientation. First of all, let us suppose the panorama in question is this one:

...and let's suppose, the position on the map is:

First of all, unlike the "full" cylindrical panorama - partial panoramas cover only part of the field of view around the location. For example, the field of view of our panorama is...

Now, the proccess of orientation consists of finding the directions of the left and right directions on the panorama:

On the map:

So, now you should click twice on the map. First click anywhere on the line marked "left", and second click anywhere on the line "right". The order (first left) is important! After the second click on the map you should be automatically redirected to the finished panorama. Note that the left and right lines are not visible - you must imagine them on the map.

And, of course, if the resulting panorama orientation is not correct - just click "Edit" (on the page with your panorama, below the map) skip the first two steps and try your orientation again.

If you still se only a "Currently unavailable..." message - the problem is probably your internet provider's DNS servers that countain old data for panoye.com domain. This should be automatically reloaded in the following next 12 hours.

...recreational place located between the Monsacro mountain and the Aramo range. To reach this place you must follow the road to Angliru, the (in)famous for being one of the most demanding climbs in professional road bicycle racing, having been used in the Vuelta a España stage race.

New version rolled out

The beta-testing phase of the new version of Panoye is now finished. There are only a few minor updates:

The "Panorama uploaded" date for every panorama,
"Google Earth" link (with the KML) file now opens in GE (Content-Type error),
Link to the tutorials (autostitch, hugin and AutoPano Pro) for users who like panoramic photography but don't know how to stitch photos together,
+ few minor technical issues

More to come, of course :)

Panoramic images with Hugin

From Wikipedia:

hugin is a cross-platform open source panorama photo stitching program developed by Pablo d'Angelo and others. It is a GUI front-end for Helmut Dersch's Panorama Tools and Andrew Mihal's Enblend and Enfuse.

Unlike autostitch, hugin is a complex program with hundreds of options. In this quick tutorial I'll try to teach you only the basics of panorama-making with hugin.

So, let's start... When you run hugin for the first time you will see something like this:

There are many different ways to stitch a panorama in hugin. I'll continue with the easiest (at least for me) path: simple manual stitching.

Click the "Images" tab:

Select the "Add time series of images" button. Then select the images you made for your panorama:

Click on the "Camera and lens" tab and check if the settings for your camera/lenses are correct. It should be, if the EXIF data embeded with your digital photos are OK.

Click on the "Control points" tab:

Now you must find control points between neighbor images. At the top there is a list of all your images. We will start with the first and second. Select the "2" button on the right part of the screen, and the second image should be shown:

Now find the controll points (ie. same positions) on both images. First click on the left side, then on the same point in the second photo. The more controll points you find - the better your result will be. For this example, I tried to find three points:

After you've done for the first and second image click on the right arrow (top-right of the window) for the second and third images pair. And so on...

Note that, after you found your first control point, hugin sometimes try to guess the best point. Just double-click on your left image - and it will try to find the same position on the other side.

After you have finished with all your images - go to the "Optimiser" tab:

Click on "Optimise now". If everything went OK - you should see this dialog/message:

Click "Yes", of course ;)

Click on the "Preview" button in the toolbar (third from the right).

This is not the actual result, but just a quick view on how your pano will be after the stitching process. As you see, the pano is not straight. Click on the "Straighten" button in the toolbar:

...close the preview window, and then go to the "Stitcher" tab, the last one:

You can experiment with the options here, but most of the times - the default options should be OK. Click the "Stitch now!" button, and select the resulting file.

Open that file in a photo-editing application of you choice (here's GIMP)...

Crop the top and bottom part of the pano:

The last step is, of course... Upload and share your panoramic images on panoye! :)

Panoramic Photography: From Composition and Exposure to Final Exhibition

The story behind a book starts long before a publisher’s contact, particularly with regard to certain experiences that are more important than others. Without a doubt, the first of these for me was reading the book, Marcel Proust, la figure des pays, by François-Xavier Bouchart, at the Nanterre public library when I was an adolescent. I had the strong sensation that a door had just opened wide for me. This was because a great photographer had published a book containing only panoramic photographs – and more importantly, ones that were so close to my own sensibilities – thus, permitting me to express myself more in this format than in any other.

Good point. I did my homework, and now the link "Report abuse" is online (below the map).

On another email someone asked me why there are no Flash and/or QuickTime player for panoramas. Well, there was, but most people didn't see it. And, it is not the only visibility question:

Yesterday I introduced the first of the new features on Panoye. Here is a full list:

Import from URL,
Six stars to rate panoramas,
Uploads of non-orientated panoramas,
Anonymous users can now comment on panoramas, but not rate them. Comments are (re)CAPTCHA protected so spamming will not be a problem (I hope ;),
Better algorithm for "popular panoramas",
Bigger image uploads: now max image size is 9000x3000 pixels and 2megabytes in size,
Server cacheing for pages, so now most pages should load faster,
+ many more minor bug fixes...

The new Panoye version will be online soon. But, for those who can't wait, here is a secret link where you can temporarily switch to "test mode" and try it all.

Import from url

Due to popular demand, I'm currently working on a few new features. One of the most important is "Import from URL" feature on Panoye.

If you have a lot of panoramas somewhere on the web and want to share them on Panoye - You had to download to your PC and then upload them. Two steps for something that should be one step.

The new feature is called "Import from URL". It will be available in your user menu:

All you have to do is to enter the URL of your JPEG image:

And then the magic happens... Panoye will retrieve your panorama directly from the URL!

This new feature will be online soon. Stay tuned!

Panoramas with Autopano Pro

I had an opportunity to test this really nice panorama stitching software called AutoPano Pro. AutoPano Pro is one of three panoramic applications based on Autostitch (the other two being Serif PanoramaPlus, and Calico).

AutoPano Pro is available for Windows, Mac and Linux for 99 € (around 145 USD).

Like Autostitch, AutoPano detects and stitches automatically your panoramas, without the need to find hotspots manually. But, also, it has many more options than autostitch.

OK, let us start with the tutorial...

AutoPano, not only stithes your photos automatically, but it can also find multiple panoramas from photos in the same directory. For the tutorial I put photos from two different panoramas in the directory ~/Desktop/panoramas/

When you start AutoPano pro you will see something like the image bellow. If not, select the "Split 50%" icon in the toolbar (the 6th icon).

Click the Browse folder icon, and select the directory with your images:

AutoPano will load your images:

Click on green Detect/Stop all icon above your images:

The proccess of searching for panoramas in your directory will last a few moments (depending on how many panoramas are there and how many photos in each panorama)...

When ready, look at the right column. There you have thumbnails of your panoramas:

Select the panorama you want to make, and then click the blue Render all panoramas icon:

The two most important options are image width/height and the output panorama directory and filename. There are many more options available, but since this is only a very basic tutorial, I will not cover them all here.

Just click "Render" and the stitching proccess will start:

The cool part is that you can actually see what the program is doing. You can also pause/resume and/or the priority of this thread.

After all, I think AutoPano pro is a very good stitching software. Well worth your 99€ ( :).

Of course, if it is too much for you, you can always use or Autostitch (free/shareware) or hugin (opensource).

Equirectangular and cubic panoramas

This post is here to demonstrate the difference between two different ways how full spherical panoramas can be saved.

Most panoramas on panoye are equirectangular:

On equirectangular panoramas some lines are distorted and some aren't. Horizontal lines at the center are straight and so are all vertical lines. All other lines are more or less distorted. Lines closer to the top or bottom are more distorted than those near the center.

That's why even non-spherical panoramas with wider visible field (i.e. bigger height compared to width) sometimes seem very distorted.

There is no way to show the entire panorama (as a single photography) with all straight lines - straight. But...Here comes the cubic perspective:

The panorama is showed with 6 different square photos. They are called "cubefaces" (because they can be arranged to make a perfect 3D cube).

Cubic perspective is better suited for fullscreen panoramic players but there is no easy way to make them. For example, I used 4 different apps for the examples above: autostitch, Perl/erect2cubic command-line tool, GIMP and hugin.

In the last few weeks I became a big fan of a service called FriendFeed. FriendFeed is a personal feed aggregator. With FF you can have all your activities from various sites in one place. For example, all your Twitts, all your images on Flickr, all your blog posts -- all in one place. Other people can comment, and/or mark as "like" for your entries.

But it was not possible to have your own panoramas on FF. In fact, there wasn't a personal RSS feed on panoye.

But, from now on - your personal panorama-feed is online. The link is on every user's profile page:

After weeks of hard work, this is the first version of the "Panoye Terms of Contents" document:

Panoye - terms of service

Panoye is a website intended for the presentation of panoramic photographs. A panoramic photograph is any photograph covering over 120° horizontally.
By registering on Panoye you agree to all the terms and conditions of this document.
Registration to Panoye is free. Every user may have only one user account within which all available options may be used. Every user is provided with a page containing a list of his panoramas, a short text and a link to his personal website.
Every user is allowed to upload the maximum of 4 panoramic photographs per day.
Photographs have to be panoramic and not contain offensive contents. Every photograph may be uploaded only once.
The site administrators may remove photographs they find inappropriate, according to the criteria set in this document.
The site administrators may erase unwarranted advertisement comments («spam»).
The webmaster is obliged to respect the copyrights of contributing photographers. Every page featuring a photograph is going to contain a link to the photographer's Panoye site.
Any user not upholding the terms and conditions of this document may be denied access to Panoye by the administrators.

Misfortune while doing a spherical pano :(

If you try to make a spherical panorama in a cold, wet and muddy place like the Baredine cave, and if you are not careful enough - this is what happens:

Well... Yes, this crack is from my Canon 300D... My brother said he can fix it (I hope he is right) and is trying right now. But for the moment - I'm without camera.

Flickr revisited

I wrote that the import of panoramas from flickr don't work for users without PRO accounts ("PRO" on flickr, not panoye :). At first I thought not to continue the development of that feature, but Padalofilo suggested to let users upload their panoramas even if they aren't PRO users.

OK, I did it and it works. Even for ordinary users. But if you are not a flickr-PRO user - you will not be able to upload the original-size images. For example, I (with my non-PRO flickr account) uploaded a 5000pixels wide image on flickr. But, when importing to panoye - I was able to upload only a 1024x254 version of the image:

But I had to give up the idea of import images directly from Flickr. There is a problem I haven't been able to solve...

Listing all user's panoramas, importing data (title, map position, description and tags) was easy to implement. But the problem is with image sizes. When you upload an image - flickr creates five different versions of your photo (see example). With Flickr API - it is possible to get the url of each of those five different images (and then import it on panoye). But the biggest is only 1024 pixels wide - still to small for panoye...

It would be ideal if it is possible to locate the original image (instead of those five versions). But it is not. Or, to be precise - sometimes it is, sometimes it is not - it depends on the type us user ("pro" or "normal") and the licence. But for most images - only the 1024 pixels wide images are available :(

Anyway, the new version will be online tomorrow. Just upgraded! ;)

Just a few words on my 10-minute web.start presentation. The first few minutes consisted of this short presentation about panoramic photography (it is in Croatian):

After the presentation I wanted to show how panoye works. But... It was a Windows Vista PC and the internet connection was broken!

I consider myself a good computer specialist but I don't like Vista. I tried it once (for half an hour) and then returned to XP and (my favourite) Ubuntu linux.

There, in front of all those people listening to me I was trying to reconnect to the net. But didn't know how to do it. One of the organisers tried to help me, but he too failed. It took 10 minutes (and three IT specialist!) to reach the internet :) The rest of the presentation continued smoothly with quite a few questions about the site and panoramic photography.

Panoye on lifehacker

It was a difficult day - yesterday. Not difficult for me personally, but for the tiny linux server where panoye.com lives. Yesterday one of the most popular blogs on the internet published an article on panoye: lifehacker.

Just a few words for all new users. Panoye is a work-in-progress. There are many things to do, and a few will be ready this month:

direct import of panoramas from Flickr,
suggestion for better location/orientation of panorama (i.e. if you find a misplaced panorama -- it will be possible to "suggest" a better location on a map),
+ a few minor bugs resolved

Feel free to ask, feel free to use panoye... And feel free to complain if something doesn't work as it should ;)

Web.Start

Web.Start is the first conference in Southeastern Europe focused exclusively on Web application development and Web startups.

Wikipedians wrote that a "Startup" is a recently formed company and that means Panoye is not a startup (it is not a company). But anyway... The organizers of Web.Start have invited me to present our panoramic photo-sharing site. I'm very happy about that but also a little bit nervous :)

Flash panoramas

You all know panoramic images on panoye can be viewed in two ways: default and java viewer (thanks to Helmut Dersch's ptviewer applet).

But, since java is becoming less popular - more and more people couldn't use the second option. Thanks to Denis Chumakov's flash player, after today's upgrade you can use flash player to see all 360° panoramas.

Here's an example, Marvic's "Muela De Urbion";

To move - click on the panorama and move the mouse arrow left or right.

Search panoye

He is not the only one to complain about the lack of search on panoye. This is something I'm been thinking for some time... Is it better to make search by coordinates, by tags, by description, by technical description, by user name, by... ?

I admit, we programmers tend to complicate things... Sometimes ;)

If you think panoramic photography is possible only because of modern stitching software, digital cameras and wide-angle lenses - you are wrong... The first recorded panoramic photo was taken 165 years ago: in 1843. It was made with special cameras (called panoramic cameras, of course ;) and exposed with the daguerreotype technique.

This short introduction is here because I found this cool site with hundreds of old panoramas from the USA. It is the "The panoramic collection of the Library of the Congress" and it contains around four thousand panoramic photos! Here are just a few, enjoy:

Weekend upgrade

Just a few changes, but it took me two three days to upgrade. Here they are:

SEO friendly links (for example, panoye.com/panorama.356-libourne-bridge-hdr.html instead of panoye.com/panorama-show.356.html)
Images for java applet viewer (see the forum post for more info)
...and a few more minor enhancements...

Also, I changed the max file size to 1mb (from 2mb).

2mb images were too big for javascript viewer -- the image had to be resized after uploading. Since there were problems even with java viewer -- now four image resizes have to be made after uploading your panorama... One for javascript viewer, and one for java/applet, one for the thumbnail, and one for the mini-thumbnail. And that takes too long -- for some images 10-15 seconds!

Planets

At the moment, panoye supports three types of panoramas:

Partial (they cover less than 360°)
Cylindrical panoramas (360° horizontal, but less than 180° vertical)
Spherical (360° horizontal and 180° vertical)

My question is -- add Planet panoramas to panoye?

Of course, planet will not be visible with javascript and java viewers. Just images. There probably won't be many planets -- since they are harder to make than normal panoramas (at least cylindrical, if you have a spherical panorama -- planet is just few more mouse clicks).

But planets are cool, aren't they? ;)

Tutorial: Panoramic photos with autostitch

Developed by Matthew Brown and David G. Lowe, autostitch is a software tool for creating panoramas. It is proprietary, but free to download and use. The only restriction is that you must acknowledge that you used autostitch for your panoramic photos.

In this article, I will try to explain how to use autostitch to create 360-degree panoramic images.

First of all, you must take your photos. I found that it is easier to stitch when the photos were taken in portrait (i.e. vertical) mode. Here you can see the images I used for this panorama:

Note that the photos cover more than 360-degrees. The photo IMG_2821.JPG is almost the same as IMG_2823.JPG. That is why my first photo will be IMG_2821.JPG, and the last one IMG_2837.JPG (because they partly overlaps).

Neighbor photos must overlap. And the bigger the overlapping area -- the easier will be to stitch them together:

When you download and unzip autostich, you just have to start autostitch.exe. Autostitch works fine even on linux (I tried it on Ubuntu 6.10 with wine).

This is how it looks like:

Next thing is to tell autostitch about the width of your panorama. Select Edit->Options and select your desired with in the in the field Width (pixels). Default value is 1400px. I usually choose 5000 or 6000 pixels:

Click OK, and then File->Open and then select your images:

When selected autostitch will automatically start the stitching process:

When stitching is finished -- autostitch will create a pano.jpg image in the same directory:

As you see - pano.jpg have those black areas at the top and bottom. You must crop them out... Here is how to do it with GIMP:

But you can use any other photo-processing software...

And then you can play with the saturation, contrast, color balance, and similar options... And here is the result:

This is how I make my panoramas. But, I'm a programmer, not a professional photographer and there are many subleties I don't know. Feel free to comment on how to make this tutorial better!

I wanted them to be as simple as possible. Without too much (rarely used) fancy features. It sill lacks a few options (RSS, basic formatings), but it will be online soon. (here is a sample thread)

Partial panorama orientation

Now orientate partial panoramas should be easier. Instead of locating two hotspots on the panorama -- you have to find the directions of the panorama's visible field; first the left side of the panorama's visible field, and then the right side. I'll write a HOW-TO article on the forum about this (when I find time).

A quick post on few new features and resolved bugs:

1. Google maps copyright-bug:

Sometimes the GoogleMap's copyright information just "went out" of its predefined space. This is now solved. Thanks to Bernie who found this bug.

By the way, Bernie have a very nice panoramic site.

2. Added a "Remember me on this computer" checkbox:

...and now you don't have to login and re-login again every time you come on panoye.

3. Added the list of the most active users (i.e. users with most panoramas) on the main page.

4. Added the "Latest panoramas" list on the blog. If somebody want to try it you have to copy-paste this code:

It seems there are problems with displaying images on panoye (not all -- the latest 20 panoramas are OK).

But... Well... The problem is with the Amazon S3 service. The only thing we have is - wait untill they solve it. I hope it will be soon!

Panorama location

Are you tired of selecting the location of your panorama (when uploading one)? I admit, I hate it:

Zoom in the map
Drag the map to the left
Zoom in the map
Drag the map to the right
Zoom out the map
Zoom in the map
Drag the map
Select "Satelite view"
Zoom...
...and so on, and after half a minute:
Click on the position.

But not any more ;) At least for locations near to some existing panorama on panoye.

If you want to upload your panorama near some other panorama - go to that panorama, and then select 'This panorama -> Add neighbour panorama' from the menu bar.

Jpeg compression

As you probably already know, when saving jpeg images - you must decide jpeg's compression rate. That's because the jpeg image format has a lossy compression rate. And the less the compression rate - more image quality is lost. But, with compression rates of 85%-100% - this loss is very small.

I just recreated all thumbnails and panorama-versions of panoramas with the compression rate of 90%. The difference shouldn't be visible, but image sizes are now 20-40% smaller than before.

...and now the panoramas should be loaded 20%-40% faster.

Long urls bug...

Thoughts on partial panoramas

It is 18:47 now. I am working on partial panoramas from this morning. Make the viewer work with them was not that hard. But, orientate them is another thing...

First of all you must select your panorama's type...

...and only then orientate it. For partial panoramas -- you must find two (not one!) hotspots. All problems come from the fact that "normal" math don't work with angles... We all now that:

300+90=390

But with angles:

300°+90°= 390°= 30°

And there are even more problems... If you think about it - absolutely every photography is a partial panorama. Even photos with big zoom factor are. But they cover a very small angle.

Partial panoramas

I am a big fan of 360° panoramas. But, of course, partial panoramas are also cool. Sometimes even better than full cylindrical panoramas. In fact, two users uploaded two very nice partial panoramas:

They are partial because they don't cover all 360° around the photographer. That is why the left and the right side don't fit together. Unfortunately, for the moment panoye panorama viewer don't work well with them...

But...

I'll try my best to make the viewer work well with partial panoramas. Stay tuned for updates (I hope it will be ready till sunday...).

Full spherical panoramas

Just upgraded to a new version. The upgrade is about the java/applet viewer. Now it will open in a new window, and it is bigger than the normal javascript version.

Panorama upload

Here is a small tutorial on how to upload a panorama on panoye.

I will use a panorama from Vojak, the summit of Učka for the tutorial. The author is Matija Pužar.

Adding your panorama consist of three steps:
1. Select panorama's location,
2. Upload the image and
3. Orientate the panorama.

When you login on panoye you will see a link 'Upload your panoramas'. The application will ask you for the coordinates of your panorama's location:

If you know the coordinates - just write them. Don't know the exact coordinates(?) - use the map. You can zoom using the '+' and '-' buttons and scroll using the arrow buttons or drag&drop the map.

Zoom and scroll the map untill you are absolutely sure you found the place. Try 'Map', 'Satellite' and 'Hybrid' on the map to be sure on the location. Then just click on the map.

Here is how I found the exact location of Matija's panorama:

I clicked on the location (the peak of mt. Učka) - and that's it ;)

In the second step you must write down the title, description (of the panorama), technical description (camera, lens, tripod...), place tags and description tags (for example: mountain, church, sea, city...). And, of course, select your image (max 1mb).

Now, panoye knows the location, description and title of your panorama. Bit it still don't know where are the four cardinal directions (north, south, east, west) on your panorama. In the third (and last) step you must orientate your panorama:

First find any distinct place on the panorama (by scrolling it left/right). For example, I used the antenna near the top of Vojak:

...and then find that place on the map. In my example the antenna is just below the "Satellite" label on the map:

Click on that point, the application will ask you 'Orientate to the selected point?'. I said OK:

Panorama: jump-on-click

As you probably know, there are two types of panorama navigation: hover and draggable. But even those who like hover agree that there is a problem -- it takes an eternity to make a full-panoramic circle (360°).

But not any more ;) From now on, you can just click anywhere on the panorama and the image will "jump" in that direction. Try it on this beatifull panorama:

Full spherical panoramas

Look at these three panoramas:

Isn't there something strange on the panorama of Poreč (the first one)? Well, yes... It is shot with a wide-angle lens, and it's (vertical) angle is bigger than other panoramas on the site.

In fact, from now on -- you can upload even full spherical panoramas. They can be viewed in full splendor with the java/applet viewer. Their cropped and resized image will be used for javascript panorama viewers.

Panorama navigation II

There was a bug in my "draggable navigation type". Instead of navigating the panorama -- Internet Explorer sometimes tried to drag&drop the image. After half an hour of searching the internet and javascript programming I think now it should be OK.

Now the question is - What should be the default navigation type?

We were in Italy (Monselice -- a very nice city near Padova), Venezia (Venice), Padova, Vicenza, Grado... I tried to make some panoramas in Venice, but there was too many people moving around :) I will probably upload those panoramas, but don't expect too much ;)

Panorama download progress

One thing difficult to do with javascript panorama is the download progress counter. For example, when you try java panoramas - on the bottom of the panorama there is a progress bar saying that 1%, 2%, 3%, ... 10% ... 20% ... 50% ... 99% ... of the image is downloaded.

With javascript that's impossible to do. But, after thinking (hard) about it, i decided to replace the loading.gif image () with the "compressed" thumbnail of the panorama. Now you can see how big is the part already downloaded in your local browser's memory:

But, there is one drawback; now the map will be displayed only after the panorama is downloaded and displayed.

I tried it with Firefox, Opera, and IE6. Try it here.

Why I hate IE

I simply can't understand why is it that this don't work...

It is just a utility function which returns me an element by its id attribute. Nothing special. But then... There is a line saying:

panorama = Utils.byId( "panorama" );

It works. Well, it worked in Firefox and Opera. But in IE, there was an error saying something like: object doesn't have that property... I can't remember now (I'm on my Ubuntu linux PC now). It took me half an hour of experiments before I found the error. The error was the word var. The line:

var panorama = Utils.byId( "panorama" );

don't work without the "var".

When I was studying Javascript, in the manual it was said that if I use var for declaring variables -- they were local variables. Without var they are global variables. Since panorama in my javascript is a global variable, I decided to delete the "var". But IE didn't like it.

Navigation types

When I decided to make a panorama with Javascript I wasn't sure how to make the navigation. Is it better to just move the panorama left when the mouse cursor is at the left side (and, of course same for the right side:). Or make left/right arrow buttons and move the panorama when the user clicks on them?

Here is another option. Click on the panorama, move it left or right and then release the button. The panorama will continue scrolling in the same direction. I know it isn't perfect (there are problems in Internet explorer), but...

Hhhmmm... It seems that somebody is claiming that there is a virus on my site. Am I right? If so -- you have my word that there are no viruses here. The problem is that panoramas need javascript to work, but some versions of Internet explorer will not let javascript run unless the user confirms. But even then -- Javascript can't read or write files on your computer.

If you don't believe me, here is a quote from a 'Security' section in the Wikipedia Javascript article:

Browser authors contain this risk using two restrictions. First, scripts run in a sandbox in which they can only perform Web-related actions, not general-purpose programming tasks like creating files. Second, scripts are constrained by the same origin policy: scripts from one Web site do not have access to information such as usernames, passwords, or cookies sent to another site.
